Free Parliamentary Procedure Lesson Plan for 9th Grade Students

Topic: Parliamentary Procedure

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to define parliamentary procedure and explain its purpose and uses.

Materials

• Whiteboard or chalkboard
• Colored markers or chalk
• Handout with example scenarios of parliamentary procedure (one per student)

Warm-up

• Have students sit in a circle.
• Ask them to think of a time when they were part of a group discussion or meeting where things were unclear or disorganized.
• Have them share their experiences with the class, discussing how the group was able to reach a resolution or come to a decision.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of parliamentary procedure, explaining that it is a set of rules and procedures that are used to conduct meetings and make decisions effectively and efficiently.
• Discuss the different parts of a meeting, such as the opening, agenda, discussion, and closing.
• Demonstrate how to call a meeting to order, introduce a new topic, and make a motion.
• Show how to vote on a motion, and explain the different types of votes, such as simple majority, unanimous, and roll call.

Guided Practice

• Divide the students into small groups and provide each group with a scenario.
• Have the students discuss and make a motion on how to resolve the scenario using parliamentary procedure.
• Have the students vote on the motion and explain their reasoning.

Independent Practice

• Provide each student with a different scenario and have them write a short resolution using parliamentary procedure.

Closure

• Review the key points of parliamentary procedure and its importance in decision making.
• Ask students to share their resolutions and discuss the outcomes.

Assessment

• Observe students during the Debating and Voting stages of the activity and provide feedback on their use of parliamentary procedure.
