9th Grade Datasets Lesson Plan (Career and Technical Education)

Topic: Datasets

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Understand the purpose and use of datasets in mobile app development
  • Be able to find, evaluate, and use appropriate datasets in apps

Materials

  • Examples of mobile apps that use datasets (e.g. weather apps, fitness trackers)
  • Data catalogs, such as Google Datasets or Data.gov

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they have used data in a mobile app before. Have them name some examples.
  • Explain that datasets are collections of data that can be used in apps. They can come from a variety of sources, such as government agencies or commercial organizations.

Direct Instruction

  • Define the term "dataset" and explain what it is.
  • Show examples of different kinds of datasets, such as weather or demographic data.
  • Explain how mobile apps can use datasets. For example, weather apps can use current weather data to display the current temperature and forecast for the day. Demographic data can be used to customize an app for a particular audience, such as showing calorie counts for an app aimed at dieters.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs to create a short mobile app that uses a dataset. They should brainstorm ideas for a mobile app and choose a dataset to use for their app. They should then create a mockup of their app using a drawing tool (e.g. Sketch, Balsamiq) or a wireframe tool (e.g. Origami, Marvel). (If time permits, have students present their apps to the class.)
  • Ask students to identify the dataset they used and explain how it was used in their app.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work individually or in pairs to create a mobile app that uses a dataset. They should use their previous experience and the skills learned in this lesson to brainstorm and create their app. They should use a drawing tool or a wireframe tool to create a mockup of their app.

Closure

  • Have students share their mobile app ideas and mockups with the class. Discuss the different uses of datasets in mobile apps and the types of visualizations and interactions that can be used.

Assessment

  • To assess student understanding, have students present their mobile app ideas and mockups to the class and explain how they used datasets in their app and what types of visualizations and interactions they created. Alternatively, you could have students complete a written reflection on their experience using datasets in a mobile app and how they could be used in future apps.
