Topic: Marketing

Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify the three main goals of marketing and the various tools companies use to achieve those goals.

Materials

  • Slides or screenpresentation on the three main goals of marketing (sales, distribution, and promotion) and the various tools companies use to achieve them (e.g. advertising, marketing plans, promotions)
  • Handout with example scenarios for each tool
  • Marker or pen for each student

Warm-Up

  • Ask students to think of a product or service that they use on a regular basis (e.g. phone plan, clothing brand, cereal).
  • Have them brainstorm a list of 3-5 reasons why they chose that product or service over others.
  • Share the list with the class and discuss the reasons they gave.
  • Ask them if they think the company that provides the product or service uses marketing to promote it.

Direct Instruction

  • Define marketing and explain its purpose (to get a product or service into the hands of consumers and make a profit in the process).
  • Introduce the concept of the 4 P's of marketing (product, price, place, promotion).
  • Use examples to illustrate how each element plays a role in the marketing process.
  • Discuss how marketing strategies can be tailored to different target audiences based on their needs and wants.

  • Have students work in small groups to create a marketing plan for a product or service that they chose.
  • Provide guidance and support as needed to help students think through all of the elements of marketing that they will need to consider.
  • Allow time for students to present their marketing plans to the class and receive feedback.
