Warm-up

  • Review the concept of career and discuss what students plan to do after high school.
  • Ask students if they have ever visited a workplace or met with a businessperson.
  • Discuss the importance of business in our everyday lives.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of business and explain that it is the activity of making money by providing products or services to consumers.
  • Discuss the different types of businesses, including small businesses, large corporations, and not-for-profit organizations.
  • Explain the different roles within a business, such as owners, managers, and employees.
  • Discuss the importance of marketing in the success of a business.
  • Introduce the concept of entrepreneurship and explain that it is the process of starting a new business.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs to create a business plan for a small company that specializes in providing a product or service that they think would be in demand.
  • Have the pairs present their business plans to the class and discuss the reasons for the decisions that they made.

Independent Practice

  • Assign each student to work on creating a business plan for a real or hypothetical small company that they are interested in starting.
  • Have students create a presentation to share their business plan with the class.

Closure

  • Review the key points of the lesson and discuss the importance of business planning and how it can help a company be successful.
  • Ask students to share their thoughts on what they learned and how they might use this skill in the future.
