Free 9th Grade How To Make A Punnett Square? Lesson Plan

Topic: How to Make a Punnett Square?

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to create a Punnett square for a monohybrid and dihybrid cross.
  • Students will be able to use the Punnett square to predict the probability of getting a certain genotype and phenotype from a cross.

Materials

  • Pen and paper for each student
  • Jam jar or other container for each student
  • Ripe fruit such as strawberries, kiwis, or pears (optional)

Warm-Up

  • Show the students a jar of regular, red strawberries and a jar of white, seedless ones. Ask the students if they have ever heard of genetic crosses and what they know about them.
  • Ask the students if they can figure out how the white strawberries could have come about.
  • Give the students a few minutes to think and write down their answers on a piece of paper.
  • Go over the answers as a class and discuss the process of genetic crosses and the role of Punnett squares in predicting their outcome.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain to the students that a Punnett square is a tool that can be used to predict the possible outcome of a genetic cross. -Show the students the Punnett square template and go over each square, explaining the meaning of each symbol.
  • Explain the procedure for doing a monohybrid cross and a dihybrid cross using the Punnett square template.

Guided Practice

  • Have the students work in pairs and give each pair a set of genetic traits. -Have the students use the Punnett square template to predict the possible outcomes of a monohybrid cross and a dihybrid cross.

Independent Practice

  • Ask the students to choose a real-life example of a monohybrid cross and a dihybrid cross. -Have the students create a Punnett square for their chosen example and explain the results.

Closure

  • Review the importance of Punnett squares in genetics. -Ask the students to share what they learned about monohybrid and dihybrid crosses.

Assessment

  • Observe the students as they complete their own Punnett squares and provide feedback. -Have the students complete a short quiz or worksheet to assess their understanding of the concept.
