Topic: Initiating a Task

Objectives: & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify the steps involved in initiating a task.

Materials

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Examples of tasks (e.g. making a phone call, writing a letter, creating a project)

Warm-up

  • Ask students to think of a task that they have to do at some point in the future.
  • Write their tasks on the whiteboard.
  • Ask students if they are able to complete their tasks without any help from others.
  • Ask students if they know how to initiate the task (e.g. make a phone call, write a letter, making a meal- pancakes, sandwich, pasta and sauce).

Direct Instruction

  • Explain to students that initiating a task means taking the first step in completing a task.
  • Explain that there are different ways to initiate a task, depending on the task.
  • For example, to initiate a phone call, students may need to look up the number, dial the number, and wait for someone to answer.
  • For a letter, students may need to find a blank piece of paper and a pen.
  • For a meal, students may need to read a recipe, gather materials, and plan out their tasks.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs to list the steps needed to complete a task together, such as making a phone call or writing a letter.
  • Guide students through the process of initiating the task, reminding them of the steps they need to take.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work on a series of tasks on their own, such as making a phone call or writing a letter, making a meal.
  • Encourage them to follow the steps for initiating the task as they work.

Closure

  • Have students reflect on their experiences initiating tasks.
  • Ask them to share any challenges they encountered and how they resolved them.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the task initiation activity and provide feedback on their ability to generate a list of tasks and a plan for completing them.
  • Have students share their completed task lists and plans with the class and discuss their choices and the reasons for them.
