Topic: Analyze the social and environmental consequences of living in the Canadian mixed market economy based on consumerism.

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to analyze the social and environmental consequences of living in the Canadian mixed market economy based on consumerism.

Materials

• Handouts with information on consumerism and its social and environmental consequences
• Handouts with cases studies related to consumerism
• Colored pencils or markers

Warm-up

• Show the students a video or have them read a passage about consumerism and its social and environmental consequences.
• Ask the students to brainstorm and list the advantages and disadvantages of consumerism.
• Discuss the advantages and disadvantages as a class.

Direct Instruction

• Define consumerism and explain why it is important in the mixed market economy in Canada.
• Discuss the social and environmental consequences of consumerism, including issues such as overconsumption, waste, and inequality.
• Provide examples of how these consequences affect individuals and society as a whole.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in small groups to research a specific example of a social or environmental consequence of consumerism in Canada.
• Have each group present their example to the class and discuss the implications.
• Encourage students to think critically about the issues and consider ways in which they can reduce their own consumerism and its consequences.

Independent Practice
