Topic: Making smart decisions

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Participants will be able to identify factors that influence decision making and will be able to use this knowledge to make smart decisions in their lives.

Materials

  • Handouts with examples of different factors that influence decision making (e.g. emotions, peer pressure, self-interest)
  • Colored pencils or markers

Warm-up

  • Ask participants to think of a recent decision they had to make.
  • Have them share their decision with the class and discuss the factors that influenced their decision.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of decision making and its importance in our lives.
  • Discuss the factors to consider when making a decision, such as consequences, risks, and needs.
  • Use examples to illustrate the importance of considering all factors when making a decision.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and provide each group with a dilemma scenario.
  • Have the groups discuss the scenario and identify the factors to consider when making a decision.
  • Bring the groups back together and have them share their decisions and reasoning.

Independent Practice

  • Provide each participant with a series of scenario cards and have them choose one to act out.
  • Have the participant act out the scenario and discuss with the group the decision they made and the reasoning behind it.

Closure

  • Review the Key Concepts with the participants and ask them to share one thing they learned about making good decisions.
  • End the session with a group energizer to bring out the participants' energy and have fun

Assessment:

  • Observe the participants during the group activities and provide feedback on how well they are able to apply the concept of making good decisions in their own lives.
