Topic: Fundamentals of Volleyball

Objectives and Outcomes

  • By the end of the lesson, the students will be able to explain the basic fundamentals of volleyball and be able to execute proper techniques in executing plays and serves.

Materials

  • Volleyball net
  • Volleyball
  • Blocking pads
  • Handouts with basic fundamentals and technique illustrations

Warm-up

  • Have the students stretch and do some light calisthenics to get their bodies moving and loosen up their muscles.
  • Ask the students to take a look at the handouts and try to identify the different parts of the volleyball court and the different positions in the game.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the students to the basic rules of volleyball and demonstrate how to serve, pass, set, and spike the ball.
  • Show the students how to properly hold the volleyball and demonstrate the different skills.

Guided Practice

  • Have the students work in pairs and practice the skills introduced.
  • Have the students practice the different skills with varying degrees of difficulty (e.g. harder sets, faster passes, etc.)

Independent Practice

  • Have the students work in groups and put into practice what they have learned.
  • Have the students practice a variety of drills that focus on the various skills introduced.

Closure

  • Ask the students to share their favorite part of the lesson and ask for any questions they may have.
  • Review the key points of the lesson and ask the students to give a brief summary.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the class and during the independent practice to see if they are able to demonstrate proper technique and basic skills in serving, passing, setting and hitting.
  • Collect the students' written reflections and present them during the closure of the lesson.
