Objectives & Outcomes

• By the end of this lesson, students will be able to understand the concept of direct and indirect proportions and be able to use them to solve problems.

Materials

• Calculator
• Pie charts or bar graphs with direct and indirect proportions
• Graph paper
• Pencils

Warm-up

• Review the concept of proportions and how to solve for unknowns using proportions.
• Present a problem to the class that requires the use of proportions to solve.
• Have the students work in pairs to solve the problem.

Direct Proportions

• Introduce the concept of direct proportions and explain how it is related to proportions.
• Demonstrate how to set up and solve a problem involving direct proportions using proportions.
• Have the students work in pairs to solve a problem involving direct proportions using proportions.

Guided Practice

• Have the students work in pairs to solve a problem involving direct proportions using proportions.
• Walk around the room and assist the students as needed.

Independent Practice

• Have the students work on a project-based activity in which they use direct proportions to solve a real-world problem. One example could be figuring out how much paint is needed to paint a room given the area of the room and the cost of the paint.
