Topic: Theme vs main idea

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to distinguish between theme and main idea and explain the difference between the two.

Materials

• Short story or passage on a familiar topic
• Handout with examples of theme and main idea

Warm-up

• Ask students to think of a story or movie they recently enjoyed.
• Ask them to share their choice and briefly explain what they enjoyed about it.
• Ask if anyone can name the main characters in the story or movie.
• Ask if anyone can name the main conflict or problem in the story or movie.
• Discuss as a class how these answers represent theme and main idea in a story or movie.

Direct Instruction

• Define theme and main idea using the handouts or slides.
• Explain that theme is the underlying or overall meaning or message of a text, while main idea is the most important or central idea or point.
• Provide examples of theme and main idea using stories or movies.

Guided Practice

• After defining theme and main idea, have students work in pairs or small groups to identify the theme and main idea of a text. Provide prompting if needed.
• Have each group present their findings to the class.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a text of their own to analyze for theme and main idea. This can be a book, article, or any other text of their choice.
