Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will understand the rituals and routines of the classroom, including the expectations, non-negotiables, syllabus, schedules, and what they will learn.

Materials

  • Handout with information about rituals and routines
  • Whiteboard and markers

Warm-up

  • Ask students to share any rituals or routines that they have at home or at school. Write their answers on the whiteboard.
  • Ask students if they know what rituals and routines are and what they are used for.

Direct Instruction

  • Define rituals and routines as patterns of behavior that are repeated regularly.
  • Explain that rituals and routines are important in the classroom because they help to create a sense of stability and order.
  • Discuss the expectations, non-negotiables, syllabus, schedules, and what students will learn in the class.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs to identify and list any rituals or routines they can think of in the classroom.
  • Go through the lists and discuss any rituals or routines that may be missing.
  • Ask students why they feel these rituals or routines are important in the classroom.

Independent Practice

  • Have students create a "Rituals and Routines" bulletin board.
  • Students can use pictures, written descriptions, and/or quotes to represent the rituals and routines of the classroom.
  • Students should also include an explanation of why they think the rituals and routines are important.

Closure

  • Review the purpose of rituals and routines and their importance in the classroom.
  • Ask students to share any additional thoughts or ideas they had while creating their bulletin board.

Assessment

  • Observe students during independent practice to see if they are following the routine and rituals of the classroom.
  • Review their bulletin board to assess their understanding of the importance of rituals and routines and their ability to create a visual representation of the classroom routines.
  • Collect and grade the reflection entries.
