Topic: Identifying Central Idea and Details in a Text

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify the centeral idea in a text and use details to help understand the text.

Materials

  • Copies of texts for students to read
  • Note cards or small pieces of paper
  • Pen or pencil for each student

Warm-up

  • Begin the lesson by asking students to think about a time when they had to read a text that was confusing to them. Have them share their experiences with the class.
  • Next, show students a short video clip of a fictional story and ask them to watch for the main idea of the story.

Direct Instruction

  • Use the visual organizer to demonstrate how the central idea and details work together to help readers understand a text. Have students work with a partner to identify the central idea and details in a short text.

Guided Practice

  • Provide each student with a different text and have them work with a partner to identify the central, and details.
  • Have students share their findings with the class and discuss any differences or challenges they encountered.
  • As a class, create a list of central ideas and details from the texts used for the guided practice.

Independent Practice

  • Provide each student with a different text and have them identify the central idea and details on their own.
  • Have students create a presentation (e.g. PowerPoint, Prezi) to share with the class, in which they explain the central idea and provide examples of details to support it.
  • Have students present their projects to the class, and allow for a Q&A.

Closure

  • Review the concept of the central idea and details with the class.
  • Ask students to reflect on their own learning and share any additional insights or questions they have.

Assessment

  • Observe students during independent practice and give feedback on their presentations.
  • Evaluate students' understanding of the concept of the central idea and the ability to identify and explain details that help readers understand a text.
