Topic: climate change

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will understand what climate change is and how it affects the Earth.

Materials

• Pictures of different weather conditions (e.g. hot weather, cold weather, rain, snow)
• Handouts with information about climate change
• Coloring pencils or crayons

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever experienced different weather conditions.
• Ask them to share their experiences and explain what happened (e.g. it was hot, it was raining, it was snowing).
• At the end of the discussion, introduce the topic of climate change and explain that it is a change in the Earth's climate over a long period of time.

Direct Instruction

• Begin by showing pictures or videos of different weather conditions and asking students to identify them.
• Ask students to think about why certain weather conditions happen in different places at different times.
• Explain that there are many factors that can cause climate change, including human activity (e.g. burning fossil fuels, deforestation).
• Discuss the consequences of climate change, such as rising sea levels, droughts, and extreme weather events.

Guided Practice

• Divide students into small groups and give each group a set of pictures or postcards of different places on Earth.
• Ask students to think about the climate and weather conditions in each place and describe them to the group.
• Have each group share their descriptions with the class and discuss the reasons why certain climates and weather conditions occur in different places.

Independent Practice

• Ask students to choose one place on Earth that they are interested in (e.g. their hometown, a place they have visited, etc.).
• Give students materials to research the climate and weather conditions in their chosen place.
• Have students create a poster or presentation to share their findings with the class.

Closure

• Review the main points of the lesson with the students.
• Ask students to share one thing they learned about climate change today.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the guided and independent practice activities to see if they are able to pull information from their research and demonstrate an understanding of climate change.
• Collect and review the students' drawings and written sentences to assess their understanding of the topic.
