Topic: Introduction of World Geography

Objectives & Outcomes

• By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify and define the terms "continent" and "subcontinent" and be able to identify the major continents and subcontinents on a map.

Materials

• World map
• Markers or colored pencils
• Handouts with maps and labels of the continents and subcontinents

Warm-up

• Ask students to brainstorm a list of the continents they know.
• Write the names of the continents on the board.
• Ask students to share the names of any continents they have heard of and why they think they are considered continents.

Direct Instruction

• Review the list of continents with the students and explain why these continents are considered continents.
• Introduce the concept of a continent as a large landmass that is surrounded by water and is made up of several countries.
• Show a world map and point out the different continents.
• Discuss the unique characteristics, climates, and landforms of each continent.
• Provide examples of countries that are part of each continent.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups.
• Provide each group with a list of countries and have them use the world map to locate each country and write it down on their dry erase board.
• Have the students work together to organize the countries into their respective continents.
• As a class, discuss the locations of the countries and answer any questions the students may have.

Independent Practice

• Have each student choose a continent other than their own and research the countries that belong to it.
• Have the students create a poster or presentation to share what they have learned with the class.

Closure

• Review the key concepts covered during the lesson, including the names of the continents, the locations of the countries within them, and the major physical and political features.
• Ask the students to share something that they found interesting or surprising about the different continents.
