Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to identify and define the terms "continent" and "subcontinent" and be able to identify the major continents and subcontinents on a map.

Materials

  • World map
  • Markers or colored pencils
  • Handouts with maps and labels of the continents and subcontinents

Warm-up

  • Ask students to brainstorm a list of the continents they know.
  • Write the names of the continents on the board.
  • Ask students to share the names of any continents they have heard of and why they think they are considered continents.

Direct Instruction

  • Review the list of continents with the students and explain why these continents are considered continents.
  • Introduce the concept of a continent as a large landmass that is surrounded by water and is made up of several countries.
  • Show a world map and point out the different continents.
