    Topic: Finding Friends

    Place name tags on the tables. This class has assigned seats.

      Objectives & Outcomes

      • Students will be able to describe the challenges of finding friends and give examples of how to overcome them.

      Materials

      • "Invisible Boy" book
      • Chart paper and markers

      Warm-up

      • Ask students if they have ever felt lonely or have had difficulty making friends. Ask them if they've ever started a new school. What was it like trying to make connections with people?
      • Discuss as a class.

      Direct Instruction

      • Read "Invisible Boy" to the class and stop at various points to discuss the characters and their relationships.
      • Ask students what they think will happen next in the story and encourage them to make predictions.

      Guided Practice

      • Have students work in pairs to complete a worksheet on character traits for the "Invisible Boy". You may need to define the word adjective and discuss a few as a class before you have students work on the worksheet.
      • Go over the answers as a class.

      Independent Practice

      • Students can make a quiet choice: Read, check out books, color, or do a word search.

      Closure

        Talk about what is means to be a good friend. What characters in the book showed characteristics of being a good friend?

          Assessment

          • Observe students during independent practice to assess their understanding of the topic.
          • Collect and review their friendship charts or videos.
          • Have students complete a written reflection on what they learned about friendship during the lesson.
