Topic: Punctuation in poetry

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to apply proper punctuation in a poem.

Materials

• Examples of poems with proper and improper punctuation
• Handout with rules and examples of proper punctuation in a poem

Warm-up

• Review the rules of punctuation.
• Ask students to share examples of poems they have read that have proper punctuation.
• Ask students to share examples of poems they have read that have improper punctuation.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of punctuation in poetry. Explain that poetry is a way of writing that uses rhythm, repetition, and imagery to create a sense of emotion. Punctuation is important in poetry because it helps to clarify meaning and create emphasis.
• Review the rules of punctuation, using the handout as a reference.
• Give an example of a poem with proper punctuation, and then have students identify the punctuation in the poem.
• Give an example of a poem with improper punctuation, and then have students identify the punctuation that should be used to correct the poem.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to create their own poem using the punctuation rules. Encourage them to use their imaginations and be creative.
• Have each pair present their poem to the class and have it reviewed for proper punctuation.
• As a class, discuss the importance of punctuation in poetry and how it helps to create a clear and focused message.

Independent Practice
