Topic: Inventions

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to explain how a particular invention works and describe its parts.
  • Students will be able to compare and contrast different inventions and their uses.

Materials

  • Examples of different inventions (could be from the present or past)
  • Handouts with information about the different inventions
  • Writing materials (pen/pencil and paper)

Warm-up

  • Ask students to brainstorm a list of different inventions that they are familiar with.
  • Write their ideas on the board.
  • Ask students to share their ideas and talk about the different inventions they have mentioned.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the topic of inventions and explain that we will be writing about a particular invention and how it works.
  • Provide students with the handout with the instructions and guidelines for writing about inventions.
  • Go over the instructions and guidelines with the students and make sure they understand what is expected of them.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs or small groups to research and draft a rough draft of their invention essay.
  • Provide students with support and guidance as they work on their drafts.
  • Ask questions to help clarify any misunderstandings and make sure the students are understanding the topic.
  • Have students share their rough drafts with the class and provide feedback and guidance on improving the draft.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work on their invention essays independently, revising their rough drafts and completing final drafts.
  • Provide support and guidance as needed, but allow students to work through the process independently.

Closure

  • Have students share their invention essays with the class, getting feedback and revisions.
  • Encourage students to ask questions and discuss their inventions with their peers.

Assessment

  • Evaluate students' invention essays based on their understanding of how the invention works, their ability to describe the parts and functions of the invention, and their ability to pose and answer questions about the invention.
