Topic: Develop paragraphs that illustrate each text type

Objectives & Outcomes

• By the end of this lesson, students will be able to write a paragraph that illustrates each text type (narrative, explanatory, persuasive, and exploratory).

Materials

• Examples of paragraphs that illustrate each text type
• Writing prompts for each text type

Warm-up

• Begin the lesson by asking students to think about the different kinds of writing they do in school.
• Ask them to name the different types of writing they can think of.
• Write their responses on the board.
• Ask them to share examples of each type of writing they mentioned.

Direct Instruction

• Explain that there are four main types of writing: descriptive, argumentative, expository, and narrative.
• Provide examples of each type of writing, using the texts provided.
• For descriptive writing, provide examples of descriptive phrases and vocabulary that can be used to describe a person, place, or thing.
• For argumentative writing, provide examples of persuasive phrases and vocabulary that can be used to make a convincing argument.
• For expository writing, provide examples of explanatory phrases and vocabulary that can be used to explain a concept or idea.
• For narrative writing, provide examples of storytelling phrases and vocabulary that can be used to tell a story.

Guided Practice

• Provide students with a sentence starter and ask them to write a descriptive, argumentative, expository, or narrative sentence using the provided sentence starter and vocabulary.
• Have students share their sentences with the class and provide feedback and guidance.

Independent Practice

• Provide students with a variety of sentence starters and ask them to write a minimum of four descriptive, argumentative, expository, or narrative sentences using the provided sentence starter and vocabulary.
• Have students share their sentences with the class and provide feedback and guidance.

Closure

• Review the different text types and the sentences that were written for each text type.
• Ask students to share something they learned about writing sentences for each text type.

Assessment:

• Observe students during independent practice to assess their ability to write sentences that illustrate each text type.
• Collect and review their paragraphs to assess their ability to write paragraphs that illustrate each text type.
