Warm-up

  • Ask students if they have ever heard of compound sentences and complex sentences. Ask them to give examples of each.
  • Write the terms on the board and explain that compound sentences are made up of two or more simple sentences that are combined with coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or, yet, so). Complex sentences are made up of one or more clauses that are combined with subordinating conjunctions (because, if, unless, while, since, unless, because).

Direct Instruction

  • Review the definitions of compound and complex sentences.
  • Use the sentences provided to demonstrate how to combine simple sentences with coordinating conjunctions and how to combine clauses with subordinating conjunctions.
  • Have students practice combining simple sentences and clauses with the appropriate conjunctions.

  • Have the students use the provided conjunctions to combine the sentences and clauses into compound and complex sentences.
  • Have the students share their sentences with the class and discuss any difficulties they had with the exercise.

  • Have the students work in pairs to create complex sentences using their own ideas.
  • Have the students present their sentences to the class and explain the reasoning behind their sentence construction.

Closure

  • Review the main points of the lesson, including the definitions for compound and complex sentences and the different ways to create them.
  • Have the students share one thing they learned about compound and complex sentences during the lesson.
