  • Pen and paper for writing

Warm-up

  • Ask students if they have heard of active and passive verbs before. Ask them to give examples of each.
  • Write the following sentences on the board:

John kicked the ball.

The ball was kicked by John.

Ask students to identify the verb in each sentence. Write their answers on the board.

  • Explain that in the first sentence, the verb is "kicked" and in the second sentence, the verb is "was kicked". These are both active verbs.

Direct Instruction

Active: I baked the cake.

  • Passive: The cake was baked by me.
  • Active: The thief stole the watch.
  • Passive: The watch was stolen by the thief.
  • Ask students to give more examples of active and passive verbs. Write their answers on the board.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups. Give each group a passage with examples of active and passive verbs. Have them work together to identify the active and passive verbs in each sentence.
  • Bring the groups back together and have them share their findings with the class.

Independent Practice

  • Give each student a passage with examples of active and passive verbs. Have them work independently to identify the active and passive verbs in each sentence.
  • When they have finished, have them share their answers with a partner or small group.
  • Encourage students to discuss their answers and come to a consensus on the correct answers.

Closure

  • Review the concept of active and passive verbs in English and the difference between them. Ask students to give examples of active and passive verbs and have them use them in a sentence.

Assessment:

  • Use the assessments from the previous lessons as a formative assessment to check for understanding. Also, do a quick observation of the class during the independent practice activity to see if students are using active and passive verbs correctly.
  • For summative assessment, collect and review the written passages written by students during the independent practice activity. Use this to assess their understanding of active and passive verbs and their ability to use them in a written passage.
