Objectives & Outcomes

Activities

• Read the story to the students.

Warm-Up

• Ask the students to think of a time when they were generous to someone else. Then, have them share their stories with a partner.
• Next, have the students think of a time when someone was generous to them. Have them share their stories with a partner.
• Finally, have the students discuss the theme of generosity in "A Christmas Carol" and how it is important to share with others during the holidays.

Direct Instruction

• Begin by introducing the novel "A Christmas Carol" to the students.
• Discuss the main characters and summarize the plot of the novel.
• Use the handouts to help summarize the novel for the students.
• Have the students take notes on the key points of the novel.

Guided Practice

• Next, have the students reread a section of the novel together.
• Have the students work in pairs to summarize the section of the novel using their own words.
• Have the students share their summaries with the class.
• Use the handouts to help the students identify key ideas and themes in the novel.

Independent Practice

• For independent practice, have the students create a short impromptu play based on a passage from the novel.
• Tell the students that they must include at least one of the key ideas or themes from the novel in their play.
• Have the students work in small groups to create their plays.
• Have the students present their plays to the class.

Closure

• Review the key ideas and themes from the novel.
• Ask the students to share their thoughts on the novel and how it relates to the Christmas season.

• Observe the students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their presentations.
