Topic: Drawing simple kindness symbols

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to draw simple kindness symbols using pencil and paper.

Materials

• Pencils
• Paper
• Kindness symbols template (provided by teacher)

Warm-up

• Have students close their eyes and think of someone who has been kind to them in the past.
• Ask them to draw a simple picture of that person or the event in which they were kind.
• Have them share their drawings with a partner and discuss what made the person kind.

Direct Instruction

• Explain that today's activity is about drawing simple kindness symbols.
• Show examples of simple kindness symbols, such as a heart, hand, or peace sign.
• Explain that the goal is to draw the symbol in a way that is simple and easy to understand.
• Demonstrate how to draw a heart symbol, then have students try it on their own.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs, with one student drawing a simple kindness symbol while the other student observes and gives feedback.
• The observing student can point out ways to make the symbol simpler and easier to understand.
• Have students switch roles and repeat.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a theme or subject for their kindness symbol, and then create multiple symbols or variations on the theme.
• Encourage students to experiment with different shapes and sizes, and with adding details or color.
• Have students create a collage or mural using their symbols, or create a series of cards or posters with the symbols.

Closure

• Have students share their symbols with the class and explain the meaning and inspiration behind their designs.
• Discuss the various symbols and the different ways that students interpreted the theme of kindness.

Assessment:

• Observe students during independent practice to see if they are successfully creating a symbol that represents kindness.
• Have students complete a written reflection on their symbol-making process, including what their symbol means and why they chose to create it.
• Have students present their symbols to the class and explain their meanings and inspirations.
