Topic: The art on ancient Egypt

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to describe and analyze the art on ancient Egypt and its influences on modern art.

Materials

• Images of art on ancient Egypt
• Handouts with questions for analyzing the art
• Chart paper and markers

Warm-up

• Ask students to brainstorm what they know about ancient Egypt. Write their ideas on the chart paper.
• Discuss the ideas as a class and add any relevant information.

Direct Instruction

• Show images of ancient Egyptian art and discuss the characteristics and themes of the art.
• Discuss the use of color and image in the art and how it reflects the culture and beliefs of ancient Egypt.

Guided Practice

• Divide the class into small groups and give each group a set of images of ancient Egyptian art.
• Have the students work together to analyze the images, discussing the characteristics and themes of the art and how they reflect the culture and beliefs of ancient Egypt.

Independent Practice

• Have the students choose one theme or characteristic of ancient Egyptian art that they find particularly interesting (e.g. depictions of the afterlife, use of hieroglyphs, use of color).
• Have the students create a project that demonstrates their understanding of the chosen theme or characteristic, using a variety of artistic techniques (e.g. drawing, painting, modeling, collage).

Closure

• Have the students share their completed projects with the class, explaining the inspiration and techniques used.
• Review the key concepts and themes covered in the lesson (e.g. use of hieroglyphs, use of color, depictions of the afterlife)
• Assessment
• Observe students as they work on their independent activities and provide feedback.
• Collect and review the completed projects, looking for understanding of the key concepts and capabilities in applying them in a creative manner.
• Administer a short quiz or written assessment on the key concepts covered in the lesson.
