Topic: Future birthday

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to talk about future birthday plans in Spanish
• Students will be able to write about a future birthday in Spanish

Materials

• Spanish verbs conjugated for the present tense (ir, estar, ser)
• Picture cards with different types of birthday celebrations (traditional birthday party, birthday celebration at a restaurant, birthday party with only adults)
• Pencils and paper for students to write their compositions on

Warm-up

• Show the students the picture cards with the different types of birthday celebrations and have them guess which one is the traditional birthday party, which one is the birthday celebration at a restaurant, and which one is the birthday party with only adults.
• Ask the students to turn to a partner and talk about the different types of birthday celebrations using the verbs ir, estar, and ser. For example, "¿A dónde irán ustedes a celebrar el cumpleaños de tu hermano? (Where will you go to celebrate your brother's birthday?)"

Direct Instruction

• Review the verbs ir, estar, and ser and their uses.
• Introduce the verbs to talk about future birthday plans using ir.
• Have the students work in pairs again, this time using the verbs ir, estar, and ser to talk about future birthday plans. For example, "¿A dónde irán ustedes a celebrar el cumpleaños de tu hermano? (Where will you go to celebrate your brother's birthday?)"
• Write the students' responses on the board.

Guided Practice

• Review the different ways to ask questions in Spanish using the verbs ir, estar, and ser.
• Have the students work in pairs again, this time using the verbs ir, estar, and ser to ask questions about future birthday plans. For example, "¿A dónde irán ustedes a celebrar el cumpleaños de tu hermano? (Where will you go to celebrate your brother's birthday?)"

Independent Practice

• Have the students come up with their own future birthday plans and write a short paragraph in Spanish about them. This should include the verb ir, which they have been practicing, to talk about future birthday plans.

Closure

• Review the concepts and grammar points covered in the lesson.
• Ask the students to share their paragraphs about their future birthday plans in Spanish.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their paragraphs.
• Use the paragraphs written during the independent practice activity to assess the students' understanding of the concepts and grammar points covered in the lesson.
