Topic: Social Problems

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to define Social Problems and identify common examples.
  • Students will be able to explain the causes and effects of Social Problems in our society and suggest ways to control them.

Materials

  • Handouts with examples of Social Problems (e.g. poverty, crime, drug abuse, homelessness)
  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Internet access (optional)

Warm-up

  • Begin the lesson by asking students if they have ever heard of Social Problems before. Ask them to share any examples they might have heard of.
  • Next, provide a brief overview of what Social Problems are and what they entail.

Direct Instruction

  • Explain that Social Problems are issues that affect a society as a whole, such as poverty, crime, and illness.
  • Provide examples of Social Problems and discuss their causes and effects.
  • Emphasize the importance of addressing Social Problems and finding solutions.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and provide each group with a Social Problem topic.
  • Encourage the groups to research their topic and identify possible solutions.
  • Bring the groups back together and have them share their findings and ideas with the class.

Independent Practice

  • Ask the students to choose one of the Social Problem topics and write a short report on it.
  • Encourage the students to include their own ideas for solving the problem and/or any additional research they may have done.

Closure

  • As a class, review the main points of each of the Social Problem topics and discuss possible solutions and ways to prevent the problems from occurring.
  • Ask the students to share any thoughts or ideas they have about the problems and possible solutions.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the guided and independent practice activities to see if they are researching and discussing effective solutions to the social problems.
  • Collect and review the presentations or written reports from the independent practice activity to assess the students' understanding of the social problem and their ability to propose solutions.
