Respect

Topic: Being Respectful

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will understand the importance of being respectful, both towards others and towards the environment.

Materials

  • Photo of a park or nature scene
  • Pencils and paper for each student
  • Colored pencils or markers (optional)

Warm-up

  • Ask the students if they have ever been to a park or a nature trail. Ask them if they have ever seen any signs or notices about how to behave in the park or on the trail.
  • Discuss with the students what the signs or notices are meant to tell them, and how their behavior could affect the environment.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of respect to the students. Explain that respect means treating others the way you want to be treated, and that it also means being considerate of others' feelings and needs.
  • Review some examples of how to be respectful, such as saying "please" and "thank you," sharing toys and space, and being kind to others.
  • Ask the students to think about a time when they showed respect to someone or something, and have them share their stories with the class.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a set of toy animals or dolls.
  • Have the students take turns introducing their toy and asking the others to guess what it is. Encourage them to be polite and considerate as they do this.
  • Afterward, have the students share their experiences and discuss how being respectful can make a difference in how others treat them.

Independent Practice

  • Give each student a small bag of toy animals or dolls and have them work in pairs to reintroduce their toys to the class.
  • Encourage the students to be respectful as they do this, and have them share their experiences and discuss how being respectful can make a difference in how others treat them.

Closure

  • Review the importance of respect and how it can have a positive impact on our interactions with others.
  • Ask the students to share one way they can be more respectful in their own lives.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during independent practice to see if they are able to identify the importance of respect and how to show respect in their own lives.
  • Have the students turn in their written reports as an assessment of their understanding of the lesson.
