Topic: The Circulatory System

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will understand the structure and function of the circulatory system, including the major blood vessels and organs.

Materials

• Illustrations or diagrams of the circulatory system
• Handouts with information about the circulatory system
• Tools for demonstration (e.g. model of the circulatory system, ropes for comparing the size of blood vessels)

Warm-up

• Have students draw a diagram of the human body, including the major organs and any vessels they know of.
• Ask students to share their diagrams and explain their choices.
• Ask students if they know what role each organ plays in the body.
• Collect the drawings and use them to introduce the circulatory system and its major organs and vessels.

Direct Instruction

• Show a diagram of the circulatory system, explaining the function of each component.
• Review the structure of blood, including the components of red blood cells, white blood cells, and plasma.
• Discuss the function of the heart, including how it pumps blood throughout the body.
• Explain the structure of blood vessels, including the different types and their functions.
• Have students take notes on the information presented.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to complete a worksheet on the structure and function of the circulatory system.
• Go over the answers as a class, discussing any questions or misunderstandings.

Independent Practice

Project-Based:
