Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify hazards and use appropriate safety tools in a science investigation.

Materials

• Various safety tools (e.g. goggles, gloves, masks)
• Examples of hazardous materials (e.g. acids, chemicals, radioactive materials)

Warm-up

• Ask students to share any experiences they have had with hazardous materials in a science investigation.
• Discuss the importance of using appropriate safety tools when working with hazardous materials.

Direct Instruction

• Show students the different types of safety tools that can be used when working with hazardous materials.
• Discuss the function and purpose of each tool, and demonstrate how to properly use them.
• Emphasize the importance of following the safety guidelines outlined in the laboratory manual.

Guided Practice

• Show students how to use the different tools, and provide assistance as needed.
• Have students practice using the tools on a non-hazardous material.
• Demonstrate how to properly use the other safety tools, and discuss the purpose and function of each one.
• Encourage students to ask questions and raise concerns during the demonstration.

Demonstration

• Show students how to safely handle and dispose of hazardous materials.
• Discuss the safety precautions that should be taken when working with hazardous materials.

Independent Practice

• Assign a group project where students must conduct a science investigation using at least two different types of safety tools.
• Have students research and planning their investigation, collect data, and analyze their results.
• Encourage students to share their findings with the class.

Closure

• Review the importance of using safety tools in science investigations.
• Ask students to share any questions or concerns they have about using safety tools in investigations.

Assessment

• Observe students during the lab activity and make note of which safety tools they are using and how they are using them.
• Collect and review the safety tool posters to assess student understanding of the importance of using safety tools in science investigations.
