Objectives & Outcomes:

• Students will be able to classify substances as either elements or compounds based on their physical and chemical properties.

Materials

• Substances such as water, air, metals, and minerals
• Tables or cabinets with doors for the class materials to be displayed
• Handouts with examples of physical and chemical properties

Warm-up

• Ask the students if they have heard of elements and compounds.
• Ask them to list some examples of each.
• Write the answers on the board.
• Ask the students to explain what they know about elements and compounds.

Direct Instruction

• Distribute the handout with definitions and examples of elements and compounds.
• Review the definitions and examples with the students, pausing to allow them to ask questions.
