Topic: accuracy and precision

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to define accuracy and precision and understand the difference between the two concepts.

Materials

• Handouts with definitions and examples of accuracy and precision
• Pencils and paper for students to practice calculating the values for accuracy and precision

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have ever measured something, like the length of a table, or measured the time it takes to run a lap around the track. Ask them to share their experiences and the tools they used for the measurement.
• Explain that when we measure something, we can get a value that is closer or farther from the actual value of what we are measuring. This is called accuracy and precision.

Direct Instruction

• Distribute the handout with definitions and examples of accuracy and precision.
• Review the definitions and examples with the class, guiding them through the examples and asking them to explain their understanding.
• Introduce the concept of the scale or units used when making a measurement, and how they can affect the accuracy and precision of a measurement.

Guided Practice

• Have the students work in pairs to complete a short activity demonstrating their understanding of accuracy and precision. Possible activities include:
• Using a ruler and a set of measuring cups, have the students measure and record the volume of water in each cup. Then, have them calculate the average volume and compare it to the actual volume measured using a water meter.
• Using a balance scale and a set of objects, have the students record the weight of each object and calculate the average weight.

Independent Practice

• Have the students work in small groups to create a short presentation or demonstration on a topic in science. The topic should be related to accuracy and precision and the students should use their understanding to help them present their topic.

Closure

• As a class, review the main points of the lesson, including the definitions of accuracy and precision and how they are used in science.
• Ask the students to share one thing they learned about accuracy and precision during the lesson.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the hands-on activity to assess their understanding of the concepts.
• Ask the students to reflect on what they learned during the lesson and how they can apply it in future experiments.
