Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to define and use new vocabulary terms from Chapters 26-30 of "The Giver."
  • Students will be able to answer questions over the content of Chapters 26-30.

Materials

  • Copies of "The Giver" for each student
  • Vocabulary list for the chapters being studied

Warm-Up

  • Review the vocabulary for the current unit. Write the new vocabulary terms on the board and have students work in pairs to find examples of each term in a passage from the book.
  • As a class, discuss the examples and clarify any confusion about the terms.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the new vocabulary terms from the current chapter.
  • Using the passage from the warm-up, have students work in pairs to find and underline the new vocabulary terms.
  • As a class, discuss the meaning of the terms and how they fit into the passage.
  • Have students take notes on the new vocabulary terms and their meanings.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs to read the passage again, this time identifying the new vocabulary terms and using them in the correct context.
  • Have students take turns quizzing each other on the new vocabulary terms.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose one of the characters from the book and write a short character analysis.
  • Encourage students to use the new vocabulary terms they learned to help them explain the character's motivations and actions.

Closure

  • Have students share their character analyses with the class.
  • Ask students to summarize the themes and messages of the book as a whole, using the new vocabulary terms they learned.

Assessment:

  • Use the character analyses and the summaries of themes and messages as assessments of student understanding of the book.
  • Have students complete a quiz or worksheet over the vocabulary terms from the chapter.
