Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to understand the importance of a positive start to the school year and how they can create a positive atmosphere in their classroom and school.

Materials

• Pen and paper for each student
• Classroom decoration items (e.g. balloons, posters)

Warm-Up

• Ask students to think about their favorite part of the school year.
• Ask them to share their favorite part with the class.
• Ask students to think about any traditions their school may have at the beginning of the year.
• Ask them to share any traditions they know of with the class.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of routines and rituals as a way of helping students feel comfortable and secure at school.
• Explain that establishing routines and rituals at the beginning of the year helps students know what to expect and when to expect it.
• Discuss some examples of routines and rituals that might be used at the beginning of the school year, such as a new student welcome ceremony, a class introduction, a class pledge, or a class song.
