Topic: Renaissance history of music

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will demonstrate an understanding of the musical styles and trends of the Renaissance period.

Materials

• Handouts with musical examples from the Renaissance period
• Music player with playlist of Renaissance music examples

Warm-up

• Ask students if they know what the Renaissance period is.
• Ask for examples of types of music from this period.

Direct Instruction

• Begin by explaining that the Renaissance period is the time from the 14th to the 17th century when there was a rebirth of interest in classical Greek and Roman art, literature, and culture.
• Explain that this period also saw a rebirth of interest in music, and that new forms of music were being created and developed.
• Introduce the different types of music that were popular during the Renaissance, including medieval, folk, and classical.
• Use the handouts to give more details about each type of music, and play examples of each type of music for the students to listen to.

Guided Practice

• Divide the students into small groups and give each group a specific type of music to research.
• Have the students use the internet or other resources to find out more about the history of their chosen type of music and the people who created it.
• Have the students present their findings to the class and discuss the different types of music and the different periods of history they came from.

Independent Practice

• Have the students choose one type of music from the renaissance period that they are interested in and create a project about it. This could be a presentation, a written report, or some other type of project.
