7th Grade 6/8 Lesson Plan Example (Music)

Topic: Understanding 6/8 Time Signature

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify 6/8 time signature and understand how it is encoded in music notation.

Materials

  • Music notation paper
  • Pencils
  • Markers or colored pencils (optional)

Warm-Up

  • Begin the lesson by explaining that music is made up of beats and each beat can be divided into smaller units of time called

eighth notes or quavers.

  • Ask students to listen to a piece of music in 6/8 time signature and count the number of beats per measure.
  • Then have them write down the number of beats per measure and the name of the time signature.
  • Encourage them to use the music notation paper to make note of the symbols used to represent each beat.

Direct Instruction

  • Review the symbols for quarter notes (crotchets), eighth notes (quavers), and sixteenth notes (semiquavers).
  • Explain that 6/8 time signature means there are three beats per measure, with each beat divided into two smaller units.
  • Have students complete the handout with the symbols for each beat in 6/8 time signature.
  • Ask them to listen to a few more examples of 6/8 music and count the number of beats per measure.

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in small groups to complete a set of rhythm exercises in 6/8 time signature.
  • These could include clapping or tapping the rhythms, but could also include written exercises where students write the symbols for each beat in 6/8 time signature.
  • As students work, circulate the room and offer guidance and support as needed.
  • Allow time at the end of the lesson for students to share their work and ask questions.

Independent Practice:

  • Project-based: Have students work on a project-based task that requires them to create a sequence of rhythms in 6/8 time signature. This could be as simple as writing a series of rhythms on a piece of paper, or as involved as creating a short song or dance.
  • Encourage students to be creative and have fun with their projects.

Closure

  • Review the key concepts of 6/8 time signature and the different ways to represent it on a staff.
  • Have students share their projects with the class and talk about what they learned during the independent practice.

Assessment:

  • Observing students during the guided practice and independent practice to see if they are able to accurately represent 6/8 time signature on a staff and accurately count and play 6/8 rhythms.
  • Collect and review students' work for accuracy and understanding of 6/8 time signature.
