Topic: Types of Triangles

Objectives & Outcomes

• Identify and classify different types of triangles, including equilateral, isosceles, right, and acute triangles, using their measurements and angles.

Materials

• Paper or boards to draw on
• Pencils
• Calculator (optional)

Warm-up

• Have the students work in pairs to find the length of each side of a given triangle, using the formula . Ask them to explain their reasoning for each calculation.
• Next, have the students draw and label a simple triangle on their paper or boards, and use the measurements of the sides to classify the triangle as equilateral, isosceles, right, or acute.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the different types of triangles and their characteristics.
• Using the handouts, go over the definitions and characteristics of each type of triangle.
• Have the students work in pairs to classify several triangles using the characteristics.

Guided Practice

• Have the students work in pairs again to classify more triangles.
• This time, provide the students with the classification key to help them with their classification.
• Have the students share their classifications with the class and explain their reasoning.

Independent Practice

• Give each student a piece of paper and a pen.
• Ask the students to draw a random triangle and classify it using the classification key.
• Have the students write down their classification and explain their reasoning.

Closure

• Review the different types of triangles and their characteristics.
• Ask the students to share any questions or thoughts they have about triangles.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the independent practice and look for their ability to identify and classify different types of triangles.
• Collect the students' posters and assess their understanding of triangles through the descriptions and examples they provide.
