Objectives & Outcomes

Materials

Warm-up

• Ask students if they have experienced solving equations with one variable before.
• Ask them to give an example of an equation with one variable and how they solved it.
• Write their examples on the board.

Direct Instruction

• Define what an equation is and what it means to solve an equation.
• Introduce the concept of a 2-step equation with one variable, and explain that these equations have two steps that need to be solved in order to find the value of the variable.
• Introduce the four different methods for solving 2-step equations with one variable: substitution, elimination, addition, and subtraction.
• Demonstrate how to use each method to solve a sample equation with one variable.
• Have students work through a few additional examples using the different methods.

Guided Practice

• Give students a set of equations to solve, and have them work in pairs to solve the equations using the four different methods.
• Have students present their solutions to the class, and discuss the different methods they used.

Independent Practice

• Have students work on a project-based activity where they use a variety of equations to solve for a variable. For example, they could use equations to find the value of a car's speed given its distance traveled and time elapsed, or the value of a project's cost given its duration and budget.
• Have students create a poster or presentation to show their solutions to the equations and how they solved for the variable.

• Review the different methods for solving 2-step equations with one variable.
• Have students share their posters or presentations with the class.
