Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to define and explain what a parallel is in geometry.

Materials

• Drawing paper
• Pencils
• Eraser
• Rulers or measuring tools

Warm-up

• Ask students what they know about geometry.
• Write their answers on the board and discuss as a class.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the topic of parallel lines.
• Show students several examples of parallel lines, using a marker and a straight edge to demonstrate.
• Explain that parallel lines never meet, and that they have the same distance between them at all points.
• Show students how to use a ruler and a straight edge to find the distance between parallel lines, and how to use a protractor to find the degree of parallelism.

Guided Practice

• Provide students with several practice problems to work on using a ruler and a straight edge to find the distance between parallel lines, and how to use a protractor to find the degree of parallelism.
• Have students work in pairs to solve the problems, providing assistance as needed.

Independent Practice

• Have students create a project that demonstrates their understanding of the concept of parallel lines, such as a poster, a presentation, or a model.
• Encourage students to be creative and to use their own ideas in completing their projects.

Closure

• Ask students to share their projects with the class and explain how they demonstrate their understanding of parallel lines.
