Topic: Rewriting Numbers in Equivalent Forms

Objectives & Outcomes

Materials

  • Whiteboard or chalkboard
  • Markers or chalk
  • Handouts with examples of numbers written in different forms (e.g. fractions, decimals, percentages)
  • Computers or tablets for students to create animations

Warm-Up

  • Have students draw a number line on the board and place a number at each end.
  • Ask students to think of a number that is between the two numbers, then ask them to place that number on the number line.
  • Continue this process until there are no more numbers to place on the number line.
  • Ask students why there are no more numbers to place on the number line.

Direct Instruction

  • Review the definition of equivalent forms of numbers (i.e. how to rewrite numbers in equivalent forms).
  • Demonstrate how to rewrite numbers in equivalent forms using a number line.
  • Explain the importance of rewriting numbers in equivalent forms in real life situations (i.e. to make calculations easier).

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs to practice rewriting numbers in equivalent forms using a number line.
  • Assist students as needed.

Independent Practice

  • Have students create a "Converting Numbers" poster that includes examples of numbers in different forms and how to rewrite them.
  • Encourage students to be creative and include illustrations.

Closure

  • Ask students to share their posters with the class.
  • Review the different ways to convert numbers and the importance of being able to do so.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the three independent practice activities to assess their understanding of the material.
  • Collect and review the posters to assess students' ability to apply their knowledge of number conversion in a practical context.
