Topic: Integer operations

Objectives & Outcomes

• By the end of this lesson, students will be able to add and subtract integers.

Materials

• Pen and paper for each student
• An example problem on adding and subtracting integers

Warm-up

• Ask students what they know about integers.
• Give examples of integers (e.g. -6, 0, 4, -5, etc.)
• Ask students to explain their understanding of integers and how they are different from regular numbers.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of integers and explain that they are whole numbers without any fractions.
• Show examples of how to add and subtract integers using manipulatives and models.
• Explain the rules for adding and subtracting integers, including the concept of retaining the least-significant digit when adding, and the concept of borrowing when subtracting.
• Practice adding and subtracting integers using manipulatives and models.

Guided Practice

• Give students a set of manipulatives and models and have them work in pairs to add and subtract integers.
• Walk around the room and assist students as needed.

Independent Practice

• Have students create a class project in which they create a game or activity that involves adding and subtracting integers.
• Students can use the manipulatives and models provided to create their game or activity.

Closure:

• Have students share their projects with the class.
• Ask students to reflect on what they learned about adding and subtracting integers during the lesson.

Assessment:

• Observe students during the independent practice activity to ensure they are correctly identifying and solving integer addition and subtraction problems.
