7th Grade Compare Decimals And Fractions Lesson Plan (Math)

Topic: Comparing decimals and fractions

Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to compare decimals and fractions using the proper techniques.

Materials

  • Whiteboard and markers
  • Handout with examples of decimals and fractions to be used for practice

Warm-up

  • Start the lesson by asking the students if they know what a decimal is and what a fraction is.
  • Ask for examples of each and write them on the board.
  • Explain that in this lesson, we will be learning how to compare decimals and fractions. This will involve looking at the digits in each number and deciding which one is bigger.

Direct Instruction

  • Next, explain to the students that when comparing decimals and fractions, we are looking at the digits in each number and deciding which one is bigger. We do this by comparing the digits one by one from left to right.
  • For example, when comparing 0.45 and 0.46, we see that the 4 is bigger than the 5, so we know that 0.46 is bigger than 0.45.
  • Next, write some decimals and fractions on the board and have the students help you compare them using this method.
  • Once the students understand how to compare decimals and fractions using this method, have them complete a worksheet or worksheets with decimals and fractions to practice this skill.

Guided Practice

  • Next, have the students work in pairs and give each pair a set of decimals and fractions to compare using the method discussed in the direct instruction portion of the lesson.
  • Have the students take turns being the teacher and the student, with the teacher giving the explanation for why one number is bigger than the other.
  • As a class, go over the answers to see if the students understand how to compare decimals and fractions.

Independent Practice:

  • For the independent practice, have the students work on a project-based activity.
  • Give each student a set of decimals and fractions to work with and have them create a visual representation (i.e. a poster, a video, etc.) to show how they would compare the numbers.
  • Have the students present their projects to the class and explain their methods for comparing the numbers.

Closure:

  • Review the key points of the lesson, including the proper way to compare decimals and fractions and the importance of being precise in calculations.
  • Ask the students to share one new thing they learned about comparing decimals and fractions during the lesson.

Assessment:

  • Observe the students during the guided and independent practice activities to assess their understanding of the lesson material.
  • Review the students' completed worksheets to assess their ability to correctly compare decimals and fractions.
