Topic: Introduction to Media Literacy

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to explain what media literacy is and how it can be used to analyze and understand media messages.

Materials

  • Handouts defining media literacy and providing examples of media messages
  • Various types of media (e.g. text, images, video) for students to analyze for media literacy

Warm-up

  • Students will be given time to independently explore one of the provided handouts on media literacy.
  • As a class, students will discuss their findings and any questions or questions they have about media literacy.
  • Teacher will provide additional clarification on any points of confusion.

Direct Instruction

  • Teacher will introduce the concept of media literacy and its importance in today's media- saturated world.
  • Students will be provided with examples and case studies of media literacy in action, such as news reports on current events, advertisements, or even popular movies or TV shows.
  • The importance of critical thinking and analysis will be emphasized, as these skills are essential in effectively evaluating and understanding media content.
  • Students will be given handouts and worksheets on the different aspects of media literacy (e.g. critical thinking, analyzing media content, identifying bias).
  • These will be reviewed and discussed as a class.

Guided Practice

  • Students will be assigned a short (1-2 minute) media clip to watch and analyze using the skills taught in class.
  • They will be required to write a brief analysis of the clip, explaining their observations and any insights gained from their critical analysis.

Independent Practice

  • Students will be assigned a project-based independent practice activity in which they are given a longer (5-10 minute) media clip to watch and analyze.

Closure

  • Review the objectives of the lesson and ask students to reflect on what they have learned about media literacy and how they can apply these skills to their daily lives.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the group and independent practice activities to ensure they are applying the concepts of media literacy.
  • Collect and review the written works produced during the independent practice activity to assess student understanding of media literacy.
  • Administer a quiz at a later date to assess retention of the concepts covered in the lesson.
