Free 7th Grade Cursive Writing Lesson Plan

Topic: Teaching students to write the alphabet in cursive

Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this unit, students should be able to write the entire alphabet in cursive.

Materials

  • Pencils
  • Cursive writing practice sheets (either provided by the teacher or created by the students)

Warm-up

  • Review the letters of the alphabet with the students. Have them trace each letter with their finger, then have them practice writing the letters on a separate sheet of paper.
  • End the practice session by having the students practice writing the alphabet in cursive, working from left to right.

Direct Teaching

  • Begin the lesson by introducing the concept of cursive writing. Explain that cursive writing is a stylized form of writing that involves connecting the letters in a flowing, continuous manner.
  • Demonstrate how to write the alphabet in cursive, starting with the letter A. Show the students how to connect the letters in a flowing, continuous manner, using a slight curve to connect each letter to the next.
  • Have the students watch and mimic your demonstrations, practicing writing the alphabet in cursive on their own paper.
  • As students become more familiar with the letters and how to write them in cursive, introduce additional letters and have the students practice writing the alphabet in cursive, starting with the letter A and ending with the letter Z.

Guided Practice

  • Provide the students with a list of small words or phrases they can practice writing in cursive, such as the phrase "I love my cat."
  • Have the students work in pairs or small groups and provide them with a cursive writing template or guide. Have the students take turns writing out the small words or phrases on the template, allowing for one student to provide feedback and guidance to the other on how to write the words in cursive.

Independent Practice

  • Provide the students with a list of words or phrases to write in cursive, such as their full name, the name of a pet, or their favorite sport.
  • Have the students work independently and create a cursive writing project, such as a set of alphabet cards, a short message, or a list of words they have written in cursive.

Closure

  • Have the students share their cursive writing projects with the class.
  • Review the steps for writing in cursive and encourage the students to continue practicing at home.

Assessment

  • Observe the students as they work on the independent practice projects and give feedback on their technique and accuracy.
  • Collect the students' written work and review it to assess their ability to write cursive letters and words.
