Topic: Adding Setting Details in Narrative Writing

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to identify and add appropriate setting details to their personal narrative.

Materials

• Examples of setting details (real or fictional)
• Personal narratives written by the students

Warm-up

• Have the students think of a fictional or real place that they have visited. Have them share their experiences with the class, and ask them to share any interesting or important details about the place.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of adding setting details to narrative writing. Explain that setting refers to the time and place of a story, and that adding detailed descriptions of the setting can help readers better understand and visualize the story.
• Provide examples of setting details, such as the time of day, the weather, and any unique features of the setting.
• Demonstrate how to include setting details in the first few paragraphs of a personal narrative, using a sample text as a model.

Guided Practice

• Have students work in pairs to write a short personal narrative, including at least three setting details in the first few paragraphs.
• Have pairs share their narratives with the class and discuss the setting details they included.

Independent Practice

• Have students choose a personal experience they have had and write a personal narrative about it, including at least three setting details in the first few paragraphs.
