Topic: The importance of computing careers

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will understand the importance of computing careers and the types of jobs available in the field.

Materials

• Computers with internet access
• Handout explaining the different types of computing careers

Warm-up

• Ask students to share what they know about computing careers.
• Write their answers on the board and discuss as a class.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the topic of computing careers and the importance of these careers in today's world.
• Discuss the different types of computing careers and the skills and abilities needed for each.
• Show examples of job advertisements for various computing careers and discuss the required skills and qualifications listed in the advertisements.

Guided Practice

• Divide the students into small groups and give each group a job advertisement.
• Have the students read the advertisement and identify the skills and qualifications required for the job.
• Ask the students to discuss whether they have the required skills and abilities and how they might develop or improve upon any areas where they are lacking.

Independent Practice

• Give each student a sheet of paper and a pen.
• Ask the students to brainstorm a list of skills and abilities that are required for a career in computing.
• Ask the students to write down their list and share it with the rest of the class.
• As a class, go through the lists and identify any common themes or ideas.
• Use this information to create a poster or presentation on the requirements for a computing career.

Closure

• Review the main points of the lesson, specifically the different types of computing careers and the required skills and abilities.
• Ask the students to share one thing they learned about computing careers today.
• Encourage the students to explore more about the different types of computing careers and find ones that interest them.

Assessment

• Observe the students during the group work activity and provide feedback on their ability to work collaboratively and research information about a specific computing career.
