Identidades Juveniles Lesson Plan for 7th Grade Students

Topic: Diversidad e inclusion de identidades juveniles

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to understand the concept of identity and its implications for the construction of individual and group identities.
  • Students will be able to identify and analyze the main characteristics of different identities and the way they influence the construction of individual and group identities.

Materials

  • Handouts with information about different identities (e.g. sexual orientation, gender identity, cultural identity, etc.)
  • Notebooks for each student
  • Pencils and paper for group work

Warm-up

  • Ask students to brainstorm a list of different identities they are familiar with. Spend a few minutes discussing their responses and emphasizing that identities can be based on many different factors, such as cultural heritage, gender, or sexuailty.

Direct Instruction

  • Introduce the concept of identity and explain that it refers to the way we see ourselves and how we understand ourselves in relation to the world around us.
  • Discuss the various factors that can influence the development of an identity, such as culture, gender, and sexuality. Emphasize the importance of embracing and celebrating our diverse identities.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the class into small groups and give each group a set of postcards or other visuals depicting various identities.
  • Ask the students to discuss and brainstorm ways in which the depicted identities might be represented in media (e.g. television shows, movies, magazines, etc.).
  • After a few minutes, have each group share their findings with the class.

Independent Practice

  • Have students choose one of the identities they discussed in their small groups and research how that identity is represented in media.
  • Students should create a presentation or poster showing how the identity is represented in media and how it might impact perceptions of people who identify with that identity.

Closure

  • As a class, have students reflect on the importance of understanding and accepting identities different from our own.
  • Ask students to share something they learned about identities during the project and how it might impact their own perceptions of people who identify with those identities.

Assessment

  • Observe students during the independent practice activity to see if they are accurately representing the identities they chose and using correct terminology to describe them.
  • Collect and review the completed identity posters to assess students' understanding of the given identity and their ability to accurately describe it.
