Topic:Greetings and introductions

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to use appropriate greetings and introductions in French.

Materials

  • French alphabets
  • Welcome posters in French
  • Whiteboard and markers

Warm-up

  • Ask the students if they know how to say "hello" and "goodbye" in French. Write the answers on the whiteboard.
  • Ask the students to introduce themselves using their name and a greeting in French.
  • Write the introductions on the whiteboard.

Direct Instruction

  • Review the greetings that the students learned in the warm-up.
  • Introduce the French alphabets (a-z). Write each alphabet on the whiteboard and have the students repeat after you.
  • Explain that there are different ways of saying "hello" and "goodbye" in French depending on the time of day and the person you are greeting.
  • Demonstrate how to say "hello" and "goodbye" in French for different times of day and different people.
  • Have the students repeat after you.

Guided Practice

  • Divide the students into pairs and give each pair a set of pictures of people.
  • Have the students use the pictures to practice saying "hello" and "goodbye" in French to the different people. The teacher can walk around and help as needed.
  • Bring the class back together and have the students share their greetings and any problems they had with their partner.
  • The teacher can invite a few students to come to the front of the class to practice their greetings in front of the class.

Independent Practice

  • Have the students work in pairs to create a French greeting card. They can use the alphabet paper to create a message in French, or they can write the message by hand.
  • Have the students present their greeting cards to the class, and explain what their cards say.

Closure

  • Review the different French greetings that were learned today.
  • Have the students share one way they can use these French greetings in a real-life situation.
  • Encourage the students to continue practicing their French greetings with their families and friends.

Assessment

  • Observe the students during the independent practice activity and provide feedback on their use of French greetings.
  • Have the students complete a quiz to assess their understanding of the different French greetings and their pronunciation.
