7th Grade Writing Simple Sentences Lesson Plan Example (English)

Topic: Writing Simple Sentences

Objectives & Outcomes

  • By the end of this lesson, students will be able to write a simple sentence using proper grammar.

Materials

  • Pen or pencil for each student
  • Writing paper
  • Sentence strips with examples of simple sentences

Warm-up

  • Ask students to think of a simple activity they enjoy doing, such as playing a sport or reading a book.
  • Have them share their ideas with a partner, and then ask their partners to share their ideas with the whole class.
  • Once all the ideas have been shared, make a list on the board of the activities mentioned.
  • Ask the students if they can think of any commonalities between the activities.
  • Once they come up with a common theme (e.g. they all involve doing something), explain that this is what we call a noun, and that nouns are the names of things in the world around us.

Direct Instruction

  • Review the nouns from the warm-up activity on the board or a list.
  • Ask students to think of a noun related to writing, such as "pen" or "paper."
  • Have a student come to the front of the class and act out the action of the noun (e.g. hold up a pen and pretend to write).
  • Have the student say the noun out loud as he or she is acting it out.
  • Have the rest of the class repeat the noun after the student.
  • Have the student write the noun on the board.
  • Repeat this activity with more nouns related to writing (e.g. "keyboard," "typing," "word processor").

Guided Practice

  • Have students work in pairs or small groups.
  • Give each group a sentence starter sentence on the board (e.g. "My favorite___ is....").
  • Have the groups brainstorm and write a simple sentence using one of the nouns from the warm-up activity.
  • Have each group share their sentence with the class and discuss any challenges they had writing their sentence.
  • As a whole class, discuss ways to improve their sentences (e.g. adding a verb, using adjectives).

Independent Practice

  • Have students work individually or in pairs to write simple sentences using the nouns from the warm-up activity.
  • Have students share their sentences with the class and discuss any challenges they had writing their sentences.
  • As a whole class, discuss ways to improve their sentences (e.g. adding a verb, using adjectives).

Closure

  • Review the steps for writing a simple sentence and discuss any additional strategies students found helpful.
  • Have students share one thing they learned about writing simple sentences during the lesson.

Assessment

  • Observe students during independent practice to ensure they are using the proper structure and vocabulary in their sentences.
  • Collect and review students' sentences to assess their understanding of writing simple sentences.
