Writing A Diary Entry Lesson Plan for 7th Grade Example Students

Topic: Writing a diary entry on a character from the novel the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

Objectives & Outcomes

• Students will be able to write a diary entry from the perspective of a character from the novel the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Materials

• Copies of the novel the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe for each student
• Paper and pencils or pens for each student

Warm-up

• Have students close their eyes and think of a character from the novel the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
• Ask students to share their thoughts with a partner and discuss why they chose that character.
• Ask students if they have ever kept a diary before and what they wrote in it.

Direct Instruction

• Introduce the concept of writing a diary entry as a way of sharing thoughts and feelings with a trusted friend.
• Explain that a diary entry should include the date, time, and location, as well as a description of what the writer is doing and feeling.
• Model how to begin a diary entry by choosing a character and thinking about what they might be doing and feeling at the beginning of a chapter in the novel.

Guided Practice

• Provide students with a copy of a diary entry template and have them choose a character to write a diary entry as.
• Encourage students to think deeply about the character and provide feedback as they work.

Independent Practice

• Have students complete the diary entry and present to the class.

Closure

• Review the key themes and plot points of the novel.

Assessment
