Topic: Voiced and Non-voiced sounds

Objectives & Outcomes

  • Students will be able to identify voiced and non-voiced sounds in English.

Materials

  • Whiteboard or chalkboard
  • Handouts with examples of voiced and non-voiced sounds

Warm-up

  • Have students stretch their vocal cords by saying "ahh" for a few seconds.
  • Ask them to notice the feeling in their throat when they pronounce the "ahh" sound.
  • Explain that when we pronounce certain sounds in English, our vocal cords vibrate or pulse, which is called "voiced" sound.
  • Show them the handout with examples of voiced sounds and ask them to match the sound with the word it represents.

  • Review the handout with examples of voiced and non-voiced sounds.
  • Explain that voiced sounds are made when air from the lungs passes through the vocal cords, which vibrate and produce a buzzing or ringing sound.
  • Non-voiced sounds are made when air from the lungs passes around the vocal cords, which do not vibrate and produce a hissing sound.
  • Provide additional examples of voiced and non-voiced sounds and have students repeat after you.

Guided Practice

  • Divide students into small groups and give each group a set of flashcards with voiced and non-voiced sounds written on them.
  • Have students take turns holding up a flashcard and having their groupmates guess whether the sound is voiced or non-voiced.

Independent Practice

  • Have students work on a project-based activity where they create a poster or presentation to teach their classmates about voiced and non-voiced sounds. They can include examples of words with voiced and non-voiced sounds and hints on how to tell them apart.
